What To Do If Your Car Overheats

What’s the hottest thing about summer? Your car! How may you ask? Well, cars need care and maintenance, as we all know. During the hot summer months, the added strain of the AC can make it challenging for vehicles to regulate their temperatures. The last thing you want is to be stranded at the side of the road with an overheated car! That being said, it can happen to the best of us.

Here are our cool tips on how to handle overheating this summer.

Pull over. Do NOT continue driving a car that is obviously overheating! If you see steam coming out of your engine area, illuminate your hazard lights and get quickly and safely to the side of the road. There, you can assess the damage and decide on next steps.

Be Prepared. Make sure that you always have a gallon of water and a gallon of coolant in the trunk of your car. Keep extra water in your vehicle available for drinking, in case you get stranded longer than you expect.

Turn off AC Air conditioning. It may cool us down, but for a car engine already struggling to keep up with the demands of an entire auto system plus a hot day, it can be too much. Opt for fresh air circulation instead.

Stay calm. It can be scary when your car overheats. Practice deep, mindful breaths, and remember that the most important thing is to make sure you and your family members stay safe. Do not attempt to drive your car until the engine is completely cold. Do not try to open the engine area or add coolant or water until you are sure the engine is cold, as you could burn your hands.

Get the engine checked ASAP. Overheating can be a sign of an engine that needs servicing. So, make sure you schedule an appointment to get everything checked out right away. This will help to eliminate future problems.

The most important thing to do to handle overheating is never to let it happen in the first place! The seasoned technicians at Carlsbad Auto Service can perform routine auto repair maintenance on your vehicle, ensuring that it will stay cool even on the doggiest of dog days!

Stay cool out there, folks!
