Resolve to Not Let Your Vehicle’s Maintenance Go Overdue

2018 is finally here, and many of us have come up with personal New Year’s resolutions. Why not have resolutions for your car too? After all, our vehicles are an extension of us and taking care of them is helpful for our peace of mind. Here are some things you and your car can be mindful of in the new year:

1. Get your automobile's body into shape

People tend to want to get their bodies into shape when the new year arrives. Why not have that same goal for your car? A basic automobile maintenance regime -- including checking for leaks once a month, taking your vehicle in for regular oil changes, measuring your tire pressure, and reading the owner's manual will help you save money and fuel. Bonus that it’s also good for the environment!

2. Be a fuel-efficient driver

Fuel consumption increases by as much as 35 percent when you speed and drive aggressively. Slow down, relax, and give yourself more time. By doing this, you’ll end up lowering your automobile's emissions and saving money on fuel.

3. Stop idling

New Year's is a perfect time to stop the bad habit of idling. There are no pluses to idling. It’s bad for your car, the environment, and eventually your wallet. Driving your car at a moderate speed is the best way to warm up your vehicle. Almost a quarter ton of carbon dioxide emissions is produced from just 10 minutes of idling!

4. Check your tire pressure

During the winter, your tires need special attention. Chilly weather decreases the air pressure, which contributes to the rolling resistance created by the snow, ice, and slush. When the temperature goes down, air contracts and as the molecules move closer together, the volume reduction causes loss of pressure in the tires. Underinflated tires can affect handling and steering, and cause irregular wear. In some instances, underinflated tires can overheat and cause blowouts. Get those tires checked!
