At Carlsbad Auto Service we believe basic auto care goes a long way toward improving the safety and dependability of a vehicle.
The vacations are over, the kids are back in school and cooler evenings have begun. Take advantage of the lull to prepare your vehicle for the winter ahead. Carlsbad Auto Service knows that breakdowns are never convenient, and can be dangerous in cooler weather periods. It won’t be long before the weather turns and San Diego could be headed for another stormy Fall/Winter. Driving safely during the fall months requires more than just cautious driver behavior, your car also needs some attention. Cold weather will make existing problems worse.
Here are a few services and suggestions our Carlsbad Auto Service Technician Team (CASTT) have for you:
Replace dirty filters, air, fuel, PCV, etc. At Carlsbad Auto Service we provide a full inspection under the hood of your vehicle which will allow us to identify any obvious signs of wear or items that need replacing or fixing. We look for leaks, cracks or loose clamps in the cooling system and physically squeeze the hoses and replace any that are spongy-feeling or brittle. As well, we inspect the underside of drive belts for fraying and replace as required. If you’ve noticed any engine noises, experienced sputtering or other engine problems, we will thoroughly inspect the engine and make any necessary repairs.
Check your brakes and tires! Weather, road conditions and other hazards require good stopping power, which means good brakes and tires are a must! If your tires have wear bars showing you need to replace them right away. Carlsbad Auto Service Techs will inspect your brakes and tires at no charge, as well, our team will check the tire pressure, as tire pressure drops when the outside temperatures change.
Check your hoses and belts, CASTT will make sure your hoses and belts are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showing signs of excessive wear, and we will replace the ones that are.
Check your lights. We always perform a walk around on your vehicle, and check the operation of all lights: headlights, taillights, parking lights, brake lights and emergency flashers. We can replace all broken bulbs and those that have stopped working. Our Light Service includes making sure all lights are clean. If you own an older vehicle with sealed-beam headlamps, you might want to consider spending a few extra dollars for a halogen lamp upgrade to improve your visibility and safer driving. This is mandatory for your teenage drivers!
Replace wiper blades. The purpose of wiper blades is to completely clear the windshield. With summer heat reaching the 90’s here in San Diego, wiper blades will crack and wear with non-use. Worn blades won’t do an adequate job. CASTT will check your blade’s rubber to ensure it is flexible and we will operate the wipers to see that the blades clear the glass. Once tested and if necessary Carlsbad Auto Service will replace your worn blades.
Make sure heater/defroster work. Driving with an improperly working heater isn’t fun or safe. Driving with fogged-up windows is an accident waiting to happen. CASST will check your front and rear window defrosters to ensure proper working condition. If necessary, we will have your heater and defroster systems repaired.
Have the battery checked. A fully charged battery is necessary to start the car in cooler weather. Have the battery and charging system inspected by our trained technicians, who can replace it if required. If you see signs of corrosion on the battery terminals or cable ends or if you spot loose connections, your battery needs attention.
Change oil and air filter. If the oil is dirty or you’re at your recommended oil change time, come on in. Checking the air filter to ensure that it is clean enough to allow for proper operation is something Carlsbad Auto Service provides at no charge.
Refill cooling system. Our CASTT recommend checking the coolant level in the overflow tank when the engine is cold. If the level is too low, we will add a mixed solution of water and coolant to allow proper antifreeze capability. It may be necessary to refill the cooling system.
Check all fluid levels. This service includes washer fluid, transmission fluid, brake and power steering fluids.
A word of caution: If you plan on inspecting your own vehicle prior to bringing it in to Carlsbad Auto Service, be sure to avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid. Always wear eye protection and rubber gloves. Note too that removal of cables can cause damage or loss of data/codes on some newer vehicles so please allow our pros to help you out.
For Vehicle and Roadside Emergencies: Carry gloves, boots, blankets, flares, a small shovel, sand or kitty litter, tire chains, a flashlight, and a cell phone. Put a few “high-energy” snacks in your glove box.
